Celebrating National Principals Month: Ken Nix of Woodstock MS!

October is National Principals Month!  Our Principals are amazing instructional leaders dedicated to ensuring our students learn more, grow more, and achieve more in our classrooms than they could anywhere else!  We’re recognizing these inspiring leaders with special posts throughout the month.  Please join us in thanking them for all they do to support our mission of being the highest performing school district in Georgia.

Woodstock Middle School Principal Ken Nix

Why did you want to become a teacher?

I wanted to become a teacher because of the impact my former teachers had on me.  There were so many life lessons that I learned in school, and I have my teachers and coaches to thank for that.  They made a lifetime impact on my journey, and I wanted to do the same for others.

Who was the most influential teacher in your life?

My government teacher in high school, Coach McMurtry.  He was hard and held us accountable for learning and for turning in assignments on time.  At the time, I didn’t appreciate it but I quickly realized that he was preparing me for what college was going to bring.  I had the opportunity to go back and teach with him early in my career and I made a point to thank him for getting me ready for my next steps.

What’s a favorite memory from your first year as a teacher?

My favorite memory from my first year was how often the veteran teachers thought I was still a high school student.  I didn’t appreciate it at the time but now it makes me laugh.

How did teaching prepare you to be a Principal?

I think that building positive relationships with students and staff members as a teacher help me form those same relationships today.  Being a Principal requires you to wear a lot of hats but at the end of the day, it’s always about making an impact and creating positive relationships and memories while focusing on learning.  I always had a vision as a teacher that I was building young men and women for others … I still try my best to make that a priority.
